How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?
There are three types of laser skin resurfacing we may use, depending on the condition of your skin.
- Ablative Laser Treatments: This treatment is ideal for skin tightening, as well as treating wrinkles and acne scars.
- Non-Ablative Laser Treatments: This treatment is best for addressing wrinkles and fine lines on those who are willing to wait 2 – 3 months to see strong results.
- Fractional Laser Treatments: This is a combination of an ablative and non-ablative treatment that treats deep wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, and pigmentation problems.
For mild treatments, topical anesthesia will be used to numb certain areas where the laser will target. For deeper treatments, sedation may be used. Throughout your procedure, we will glide the laser over your skin, targeting the treatment areas. You may feel the warmth from the laser, followed by cold air from the built-in cooling system. The laser energy will destroy damaged skin cells while stimulating new collagen growth. Following lighter resurfacing treatments, an ointment will be smoothed over your skin and you can return home for your recovery. Your skin may have slight redness, irritation, and swelling. This will go away in a few days, and the peeling process will occur over the next 3 – 5 days. Recovery could take a few weeks, however, for deeper treatments. Deeper treated areas will most likely be covered by dressings, and the swelling, burning, and irritation side effects may be more intense. For all laser treatments, your skin will naturally flake, crust, and peel off. It's vital to avoid picking at the skin during the healing process to prevent scarring. Once the peeling process has finished, your skin will feel smoother while appearing younger, clearer, and rejuvenated.
